Building Systems That Support Fatherhood in Marriage Programs
One Day Institute Building Systems That Support Fatherhood in Marriage Programs
Erik Vecere, MS
Overview
Healthy families stem from healthy relationships between mom and dad, yet most dads are on a different level than mom when it comes to relationship skills. In order to more effectively build healthy relationships with mom, dads need to become more aware of concepts like family of origin, masculinity, understanding himself and handling and expressing emotions. That is why it is critical that marriage programs create a “safe zone” for dads to become more self-aware. More and more research is showing that programs that create opportunities to break men and women into separate groups on sensitive gender-related issues and come back together have better outcomes than programs that keep both genders together the whole time.
During the training session, you will learn a five-element system designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to effectively build a system of support for fathers in your marriage program. You will be able to apply this model regardless of the type of marriage program you have.
The five elements are:
• Assess the father friendliness of your agency
• Identify and address barriers to incorporating father-specific programming elements
• Learn how public policy and culture affects father involvement in your marriage program
• Identify father-specific programming strategies for your marriage program
• Identify and use existing fatherhood programs and resources in your community to support fatherhood
The trainer will use the principles of Accelerated Learning (AL) for the delivery of the content in this training. AL, developed by Dave Meier of the Center for Accelerated Learning, is a highly interactive, exercise-based methodology for designing training courses. The hallmarks of AL are image-based content couched in Sensory, Auditory, Verbal and Intuitive (SAVI) learning, or “total-body” learning which invokes all of the senses in participants to help them learn and retain course material.

The training is open to educators, directors, programming staff, community leaders, direct service providers, clergy, and the public.
