Question: Do I need this certification if I want to teach marriage education classes. Do you offer it any other time?????
You do NOT NEED the CFLE certification to teach marriage education classes. The CFLE designation after you name adds additional credibility even if you're already a degreed/licensed mental health professional. You add this designation only if you feel it would add to your marketability or credibility. It means your credentialed as a Family Life Educator by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). NCFR does offer the exam at other times throughout the year. (Note, it is not Smart Marriages/CMFCE that offers this exam and certification, it is the NCFR.) - diane
Here is an earlier answer to this question from several years back which I hope is still accurate:
> The CFLE designation is one that fits very well with our work (marriage and
> family education) and is nice to have for both credentialing and "political"
> reasons - that is, even if you've got all kinds of letters after your name
> (PhD, MSW, DMin, MBA, JD, etc) it's nice to add that you're a certified
> EDUCATOR as well.

> And, if you're changing fields or working as lay educators, it's very useful
> to have the CFLE credential. Minimum requirement is a bachelor degree (in
> anything). If the degree is family-related (family studies, human
> development, etc) you also need two years of experience in providing family
> life education. Those with non-family-related degree, need five years of
> experience. I've heard that most all of it (like which degrees are
> "family-related" and which course work and which experiences qualify) is
> open to interpretation. For instance, attending/teaching training Institutes
> at Smart Marriages can qualify. And, so many of you have so much experience
> creating and teaching. Fill out the forms and help them understand your
> qualifications. - diane
