Long Married Couples
The couples listed below are, as far as we know, first marriages...or, I guess as in the case of Martha Washington, remarried widows and widowers. Should we also include the divorced who are in long remarriages (Ronnie and Nancy Reagan/Paul & Joanne/Christopher & Dana Reeves)? How about couples where the scandal and infidelity are what we think of first, Bill & Camille Crosby, Bill & Hilary Clinton, John & Elizabeth Edwards, Kathie Lee & Frank Gifford, the Spitzers – where they are working at it - for better or worse, or they persevered (or simply endured?) - till death - like Franklin and Eleanor? Jack and Jackie? Send your comments, additions, corrections, notations. - diane@smartmarriages.com

Book:
It’s the antithesis of “Temptation Island.” “Couples: A Celebration of Commitment,” a book of portraits by M.I. Hamburg and essays by Catherine Whitney (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $27.95), profiles the marriages of 35 prominent pairs and shares their secrets for staying together.
The couples include Mario and Mtilda Raffa Cuomo, Evelyn and Leonard Lauder and Allan Houstin, the New York Knicks star, and his wife Tamara. Among other tidbits, the book reports that the jovial weatherman Willard Scott cut his honeymoon short to attend clown school and that the very first meal that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg served her husband was an inedible Homer tuna casserole.
O.K., so the book doesn’t portray marriage as a wild, sexy romp in a hot tub in Belize. Mr. Hamburg, the photographer, said he wanted to focus instead on the importance of endurance, loyalty and compromise in a marriage – something more akin to a lifelong episode of “Survivor.”
